 GEMS Course: Starting A Course

GEMS Faculty: The Course Coordinator is responsible for selecting the Faculty for the course.

Prerequisites/Qualifications

To be considered for a position on the GEMS Faculty, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a health care professional or allied health professional.
  • Have teaching experience and knowledge of the scope and practice of prehospital medical services.
  • Successfully complete the GEMS provider course at the level for which he or she wishes to teach.

Responsibilities

The GEMS Faculty have many important responsibilities that ensure a quality GEMS course. Faculty should possess the knowledge and skills necessary to teach the course, and shall:

  • Facilitate Learning-Faculty should teach the assigned material in an engaging manner that facilitates the learning process of the participants in the course.
  • Work with Course Coordinator and Other Faculty-Typically, a GEMS course involves one Course Coordinator and several Faculty members. It is essential that all the leaders work together to conduct a successful course, in a consistent manner.
  • Be Familiar with Assigned Material-In order to be effective teachers, the Faculty must familiarize themselves with the course objectives and assigned material prior to the course.
  • Read All Assigned Material-Faculty members will receive a copy of the GEMS Resource Manual and the GEMS Textbook prior to the course. They must read the sections pertaining to their teaching assignments and be prepared to present the material.

Faculty-to-Participant Ratio

In a GEMS course, the Faculty-to-participant ratio is 1:6; therefore, the number of Faculty needed depends upon the number of participants enrolled in the course. For example, if a course has 24 participants, 4 Faculty members are needed.

Preparation

The Course Coordinator is required to meet with all Faculty prior to the start of the course in order to address the following:

  • Course schedule
  • Questions about course content
  • Management of scenarios and skill stations
  • Any unusual situations or potential irregularities, and local protocol issues.
